All praise be to Allah, for it is only by His mercy and blessing that the Muslim community of New Zealand was able to acquire this nearly century-old Church in 2018, transforming it into Mataura’s inaugural Masjid and Community Centre.
Mataura Masjid was officially opened to the public on Friday, 2 Ramadan 1439 or 18 May 2018, commemorated by the call of Athan performed by Mataura Muslim Association’s first president, Haji Zamberi Mat Yunus.
Mataura, situated in the Gore District, lies between Dunedin (a 2-hour drive away) and Invercargill (accessible within 40 minutes). This Masjid marks the seventh establishment of its kind across the entirety of the Otago region.
Conveniently situated on SH1 at 127 Main Street in Mataura, the Masjid stands as a prominent landmark.
